Swami Vivekananda Teachings

In my last post about Swami Vivekananda, I gave a brief about his history and education. I also posted a quote by Swami Vivekananda. In this post I have posted another by Swami Vivekananda. Hope you will like his teachings. His thoughts definitely have deep impact on individual.

“When I Asked God for Strength
He Gave Me Difficult Situations to Face

When I Asked God for Brain & Brawn
He Gave Me Puzzles in Life to Solve

When I Asked God for Happiness
He Showed Me Some Unhappy People

When I Asked God for Wealth
He Showed Me How to Work Hard

When I Asked God for Favors
He Showed Me Opportunities to Work Hard

When I Asked God for Peace
He Showed Me How to Help Others

God Gave Me Nothing I Wanted
He Gave Me Everything I Needed.”

  1. I know a story that comes along with this poem :). :

” One day a small opening appeared in a cocoon , a man sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to make its body through that little hole . Then it seemed to stop making any progress .

It seemed she had gotten as far as it could and could go no further . So the man decided to help the butterfly , he took scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon . The butterfly then emerged easily . But his body was limp and was tiny and had crumpled wings .

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that , at any moment , the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body , which would contract in time. Nothing happened !

In fact , the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a withered body and shriveled wings . She was never able to fly .

What the man , in his kindness and haste , did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening was the way that God made with the fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon .

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life . If God allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles , it would cripple us . We would not be as strong as we could have been. We could never fly .

  2. That’s a very profound poem that helps me understand so much about my life. Thank you very much for posting it.

  3. Hello Gaurub. I’ve not heard this before but it reminds me of of this bit of wisdom — Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.

Would love to hear from you :)
